Does anyone here have gallstones? Did you get them removed? I have them and they aren't real big but I am not too keen on having surgery. I have heard there are medicines that will help dissolve the stones. Has anyone gone through this?

I haven't had them thankfully but my cousin did after the birth of her first child. She finally had to have the surgery because the medications didn't work for her.

I had mine taken out when I was just eighteen. I had "sand" type gallstones-a whole gallbladder FULL of them. But I had cholecystitis which is an inflammation of the gallbladder. I had an obstruction that turned me yellow and I had to have mine out as an emergency. That's the thing, if you have gallstones and get very sick there is always a chance you will have to have emergency surgery and Log in or Register to read more… |

What I would suggest is that you get a gallbladder function test and see how well your gallbladder is working. I believe the threshold is 37%. If it's not working well you may have no choice but to get it taken out. You can try dandelion, chammomile, and milk thistle to help dissolve the stones.

Nothing is proven to dissolve gall stones. And yes, if not removed they can block the bile duct and leave you with a necrotic or gangrenous gall bladder that can kill you, and so you face emergency treatment and are far more likely to have to have open surgery.
Far better to have controlled surgery that is planned, and keyhole. Been there, done that.

You can drink plenty of apple or pear juice which contains a chemical that can break down gall stones. Also you can have a drink of warm water with a twist of lemon. This works in numbing the pain of the gall stone.

I was so sick for so long that I finally said "Please, just take it out". The medication didn't work for me either so I had to go ahead and just have it done. If you have it done before they have to do it as an emergency, you have a greater chance of having a laproscopic surgery versus an open procedure. For the laproscopic surgery you will probably be looking at down time of about 2 weeks. Log in or Register to read more… |

I had my gallbladder taken out when I was young. It wasn't a hard operation but I had to have an open one since I had HUGE gallstones. I don't know what predisposes you to gallbladder disease but I wish we didn't even have a gall bladder.

I had gallstones when I was in my 40's and the pain was atrocious. I went in for one of the first microscopic surgeries done in Canada. They take you in the night before and in the morning you have the "surgery" which isn't really anything major. They put two holes in your abdomen and one through your bellybutton and crush the gallbladder and stones and syphon them out.Â

The removal of the gallbladder surgically is usually conducted for the treatment for
gallstones. Surgery is done through a large
abdominal incison or small punctures of the abdominal wall.

Gallstones Causes
Gallstones occur when bile forms solid particles (stones) in the gallbladder.
The stones form when the amount of cholesterol or bilirubin in the bile is high.
Other substances in the bile may promote the formation of stones.
Pigment stones form most often in people with liver disease or blood disease, who have high levels of bilirubin. Log in or Register to read more… |

Once gallstones start giving symptoms, surgery is the best treatment. However, you may be given painkillers and antibiotics through a drip if the gallbladder gets infected. Surgery is performed once the infection settles down – usually a week later.
Taking a medicine called ursodeoxycholic acid may sometimes dissolve small stones. This may take years of treatment, is not usually Log in or Register to read more… |

Gallstones are solid lumps or stones that form in the gallbladder or bile duct. They form when bile, which is usually liquid, hardens. One large stone may develop, or many small ones.
If your gallstones are causing you symptoms and aren't removed, they can cause further problems such as inflammation, infections and blockages of your gallbladder, bile duct, pancreas and bowels.
