Sometimes I will get abdominal pains for what seems to be no reason. They are sporadic–very random at times. Often they will be tense, like menstrual cramps, but they go away after a few minutes. Any ideas on what could cause this? I haven't talked to my doctor about it yet.

Could you be ovulating? I know the week after I get my period I get terrible cramps and the doctor told me it's when I'm ovulating. You could also have a cyst on your ovary, so you should go get it checked out just to be sure.

Have you considered what you've been eating recently? Spicy and acidic foods often give me sharp stomach pains similar to what you're describing. This usually occurs for me the morning after I eat those foods, so it took a little while for me to make the connection.

Thanks for your responses. I guess that it could be either, actually. I've never really tracked when I get the pain. I've been trying to eat better lately (it's one of my resolutions), so if it's something I eat, hopefully that will rid of it.

There are many different causes of abdominal pains. Sometimes these pains are just symptoms of another illness. If this is a regular problem then you should visit your physician for a check-up.

Abdominal pain is caused by inflammation (for example,
appendicitis, diverticulitis, colitis
), by stretching or distention of an organ (for example, obstruction of the
intestine, blockage of a bile duct by
gallstones, swelling of the liver with
hepatitis), or by loss of the supply of blood to an organ (for example, ischemic
colitis).

There are many reasons why you may have pain in your abdomen. People often worry about appendicitis, gallstones, ulcers, infections and pregnancy problems. Doctors also worry about these, as well as many other conditions. Abdominal pain may not come from the abdomen. Some surprising causes include heart attacks and pneumonias, conditions in the pelvis or groin, some skin rashes like shingles, Log in or Register to read more… |
