I have a cousin who suffered from erosive esophagitis, and he was told that it was because of acid reflux. I am appalled that his condition could be brought on by such a disease!

This is usually the result of a prolonged acide reflux condition. And yes, it does happen. So as soon have you have the symptoms for acid reflux, make sure that you consult your doctor to get some relief and prevent this!

I've heard that sleeping on the left side of your stomach can help you deal with acid reflux, but why is this?

Well, it does help in alleviating the symptoms, but it doesn't cure the reflux itself.

You can try acupressure for acid reflux. You should apply the pressure to pericardium 6 or P6, this is found on the underside of the wrist, where you can find the two tendons. If you are familiar with the pressure points for nausea and vomitting, this is it!

Erosive esophagitis develops in chronic GERD patients when acid causes sufficient irritation and inflammation to produce extensive and injures the esophagus. Some studies have suggested that overweight Caucasian males with GERD are at highest risk for this condition. In anyone, however, the longer and more severe the GERD condition, the higher the risk for erosive esophagitis.

Does acid reflux cause hoarseness or even loss of voice? Some time ago my daughter (whose work requires continuous talking) experienced hoarseness, then her voice reduced to a mere whisper. She had no cough or cold, no fever, no heartburn or any pain. The doc prescribed Omeprazole. When my daughter looked it up she found out it was for acid reflux. ( I said Huh? Hoarseness or change in voice is definitely a symptom of GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease.
