I've heard online that garlic is an effective treatment for acne.  When I ate minced garlic, it was certainly an effective treatment for foot odor; I think it reduced the ph or something, so the bacteria that caused the odor couldn't grow.  It stands to reason that it would also kill the bacteria that cause acne, especially if it's applied directly to the skin.  Ehow talks about it here:

That`s interesting. Doesn`t it make your skin smell though? Like when you eat garlic your breath stinks. My son had a really bad acne problem when he was in Job Corp. But when he came home from N.C. it cleared up. He used Clean and Clear astringent. He thinks that the food they had at Job Corp made his face break out.

Yeah garlic really smells really bad. But if it is true that it can cure acne, I won't mind the smell as long as it really works.

You can apply it before going to sleep so that you won't have to smell while your at work or at some outdoor activities.

I don't think I could stand the smell long enough for the cure to work. Sugar is also a great way to cure an infection. I don't know why it works but if you use betadine and sugar in a sore it will heal. Maybe it would work for acne?

Let me get this straight- if you wipe garlic on your skin, it will clear up the acne? Or are you suppose to eat more garlic?

I am a garlic lover, but I don't think I could wipe it on my skin.

Yeah. I have a friend who uses red lipsticks on acne.

But for me, you just got to clean your face after your work or travel or any activities you do outside your house and get enough sleep.

Gently washing the affected areas with warm
water and a mild soap twice a day to remove dead skin cells and excess oil. Using
a topical (applied to the skin) over-the-counter acne treatment containing
benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.

That sure is an interesting idea, but garlic can feel hot on the skin and may be uncomfortable.  Your best bet for herbal remedies for acne would be plain water as pear_mi says, then you have these options:

  • Evening primrose oil that comes in capsule form.  Take 1500 mg daily until it clears up.
  • Tea Tree Oil
  • Goldenseal
  • Chinese herbs like honeysuckle

You'd be surprised by the list of things people put on their faces to relieve themselves of acne!  This includes baby powder and toothpaste.

The bad news is that some of these substances can

I haven't tried garlic on acne and I don't think I can stand the smell.  But I've tried toothpaste and it seemed to work for me, I mean, at least it dried up the acne and formed some kind of crust.

I think nothing beats frequent washing with soap and water to dry up the acne.  An antibacterial  sulfur soap works well too.
