It seems to me that if they knew for sure the cause, the cure would be a done deal.  I heard something just in the past week or so that they've closed in on another possible connection that might account for why people contract Alzheimer's.  It's a sad disease, so I really hope they find a cure soon.

It is a very debilitating disease and I too heard something last week on the news that said you could get a blood test to determine if you have that certain gene which will cause it.  I do hope that is true because then they will be on the road to finding the cure.  I have had a few friends who ended up with it and a few friends whose wives or husbands have had it and it is harder on the

Some say that there is some type of chemical imbalance in the brain that causes Alzheimer. But scientist can't naturally pinpoint in to a certain source.

My grandmothers on both sides have alzheimers. My maternal grandma just passed away after more than ten years of suffering from the disease and around eight years being bedridden. We think what caused her to develop alzheimers is her diet. She always never eats enough. She eats very little, and we suspect she allows a few hours to pass before eating a meal. I don't know if our observation is

I sure hope this disease isn't mostly hereditary because my mother also  had it.  And I hope there's some kind of prevention too while they still haven't found a cure for it yet.

They say idleness and lack of mental stimulation. I hope that's really not true. Because if it is, then an awful lot of people are at risk.

No one factor appears to cause Alzheimer's disease. Instead, scientists believe that it may take a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors to trigger the onset of symptoms. While the causes of Alzheimer's are poorly understood, its effect on brain tissue is clear. Alzheimer's disease damages and kills brain cells.

Two types of brain cell damage are

Alzheimer’s research shows that genetics are a strong component to the
development of the disease; and, although scientists are certain of the
genetic link to Alzheimer’s, they also recognize that environmental
affects can play a role.

This is a really helpful thread.  So far we haven't had any dementia in my family, but it is nice to know the signs so we can know what to look for.  It is nice to know that it can be partially avoided by not smoking or drinking.

I believe they have now found a gene that is linked to alzheimer's disease. One way to prevent it is to keep your brain active. Learn new skills and do old ones in a new way for example brushing your teeth with your left hand instead of your right.

the main cause of alzheimer's, if not genetic, is because of old age..

It is likely that the causes
include genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Because people
differ in their genetic make-up and lifestyle, the importance of these
factors for preventing or delaying AD differs from person to person.
