So what exactly does the appendix do for the body? I have never been able to figure that one out.

The appendix
produces a small amount of mucus that flows
through the open center of the
appendix and into the cecum. This mucus is used as an antibody to use for your immune sysytem.

Interesting! I never knew what purpose it served either but I know many people who function just fine without it. As a matter of fact I am one of two or three people in my entire family who still has theirs!

That's interesting! I had my appendix removed when I was in 6th grade and I remember the doctor telling me that I may get sick more often without the appendix. At the same time I have always heard people say it is completely useless. It made me wonder why the doctor would tell me that if it did absolutely nothing. Thanks for sharing the information!

Gee, I didn't know it served a purpose at all. Â I've been told it was a leftover from human evolution which served no purpose any more. Â I would love to know who finally discovered the purpose of the appendix.

I agree with you Roland, I also thought that it was a remnant of evolution and didn't have a special purpose. Which is why it was okay to have them removed!

That's pretty cool I didn't know that it actually served a purpose either. I knew that it can be removed and you can go on to be perfectly healthy, but if it becomes inflamed and ruptured you can get very sick and even die from the infection. Definitely a reason to get any abdominal pain checked out promptly.

Â
Yeah, I wonder if doctors had this funny experience when a person seemed to have all the signs and symptoms of appendicitis and when they opened him up alas – no appendix!

Glad to know that there is a purpose of this part of the body. I thought the appendix serves nothing so it is alright to remove it.
