Has anyone else tried this trick before? When you are having an asthma attack you can brew a really really strong pot of coffee and it will help open up your breathing passages and give you a little relief. Not sure exactly why it works but it always helps me.

I don't have asthma but my cousin does and he used to use this trick all the time.  It has something to do with the caffeine dilating maybe the bronchioles in your lungs to make it easier for you to breathe.  That's pretty cool that other people have tried this. I'm going to call my cousin and tell him.

Wow!  I didn't know that.  Thanks for the tip.  I have a friend who is an asthmatic and he will sometimes have attacks while we are out and about.  I will have to remember this and make him stop for coffee when he starts having trouble.  Thanks!

This is one that has always worked really well for me as long as it's really strong. Another tip that helps me sometimes is to take a really hot shower or sit in the bathroom while a hot shower is running.

Chicken soup, cigarettes, and coffee have all been cures through the ages for the asthma patient. Sitting by a fan in the cool breeze will offer relief. Air breathed in through a jug of honey by the nose will lessen your symptoms. And lemon juice with pepper will keep asthma attacks at bay. Or how about eating a live fish stuffed with special herbs? All of these have been proposed as asthma

Thanks for that Seena.

I don't think that SarahD was offering a cure for asthma, only relief for its attacks.  I have to admit that i have not tried the coffee trick though.

I have always gotten relief from placing a bottle of honey under my nose when I start getting an asthma attack.  I don't know why, but it really helps me breath easier.

My mom also told me to mix honey and water and drink it three times daily to stave off asthma attacks.  I found that while i still have attacks, it is much less in frequency now.

I've also heard from friends that coffee  relieves  asthma. It's probbaly the calming effect of the vapors when inhaled  and maybe the relief is psychological too,  (placebo effect)   which is not bad.

The strong coffee trick does indeed work well and has been told to me by several doctors over the years. It works because the caffeine helps to open up your bronchioles in the lungs allowing you to get some air. It's not a cure it may not even stop an attack but it can help you in a pinch while you wait in the doc's office for a breathing treatment or for your medications to kick

While doctors will never advise drinking coffee as the
sole treatment for asthmatic symptoms as they did hundreds of years ago. They
do agree that the caffeine found in coffee is particularly beneficial in an
emergency situation. Evidence shows that people have used coffee in situations
where inhalers were completely unavailable, such as when on vacations and on anLog in or Register to read more…

Never heard of coffee as a relief for asthma. A friend of mine suffers from asthma and sometime it attacks when we are outside. Now I know what to do when her asthma attack, it simply means she needs a coffee break.
