I try to follow the right techniques when I lift weights, but I still experience some mild back pain. The pain's not terrible, but I wonder if it's something I should really worry about, or if it's a normal part of working out.

No, you should not experience back pain when weight lifting if you are using proper form. Do you exercise in a gym? You should ask a personal trainer to give you a few pointers on proper form for various exercises. Also, make sure you stand in front of a mirror when weight lifting so you can be sure you're doing it properly. Could it be because you are not stretching or warming up your muscles properly before you start lifting weights? I know I'm taking a zumba class and I was really sore in the beginning and the instructor told me I had to stretch more before we started the class.

Thanks for the tips, I think you both may be right. Stretching enough has never been a strength of mine, and as I'm getting older I bet that's affecting me more. I like the idea of using a mirror too. I always thought I was using the right form, but maybe if I watch myself I'll pick up on a mistake here and there that I can correct.

Remember to tighten your abdominal muscles and your glutes so they support your back. That's what I hear all the time in yoga class, so I figure it applies here as well.

Weight lifting back pain is a common side effect of resistance based exercise. The spine is designed to handle extra weight. It is healthy to use moderate weight training to increase muscular and skeletal strength.

I'm suspecting that you are lifting weights that are really heavy that creates strain on your back. Go with moderate weights and try to make more repetitions on them than using heavier weights with less repetitions.

Preventionis better than cure. You should consult a doctor and look what is it rather than waiting for something serious.
