What causes Fibromyalgia and is there anything that can be done to either cure it or alleviate the pain from it?

What causes it is unknown-in fact some doctors still don't believe in it. Like ME they think that it is simply in the mind.
There is no effective treatment, no cure-I guess in part because no cause has been found.

Rowena, if you have fibromyalgia (and from your other post in the Back Pain forum, I think you do), this might help. I found this article that says "Indeed, accumulating experience suggests that Lyme Disease may be a frequent cause of fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue (8,12)." Have you been tested for Lyme Disease? Because there are definitely treatments for THAT–antibiotics you can take. Log in or Register to read more… |

Gee amagra! I've never heard that. My wife has fibromyalgia and it's really debilitating in some instances. She gets so tired she can't even make it through the day without a nap. She doesn't work now so she can keep a crazy schedule if she needs to.

The cause of fibromyalgia is currently unknown but stress and adnormal serotonin metabolism are thought to linkage to the cause. There are several other hypotheses but not direct belief of the cause of fibromyalgia.

It is not life-threatening nor progressive, however the pain and other symptoms of Fibromyalgia can be quite devastating to live with. More women than men develop it and its symptoms vary widely from person to person. Not only that, symptoms within the same person can fluctuate wildly. They may change from day to day or even hour to hour.
