I went to the doctor for back pain and he said that he thinks I have a pinched nerve in my spine. He prescribed some pain pills and said to get plenty of rest but so far it's not working. Anybody have any helpful treatments or advice?

I have never heard of a pinched muslce within the spine, maybe he means around the spine? What types of pain pills did he suggest also? I know sometimes muscle relaxers work different for people.

Sorry to hear that Shelly I have had a pinched nerve in my back before too and it sucks! The heating pad really helped me a lot in addition to the pain pills.

I would advice that you get a second opinion. If it is a pinched nerve, chances are your doctor would have already recommended surgery.
There are, however, some alternative medicine for pinched nerves and other back pain problems in general. One is to see a licensed chiropractor to have your back aligned (thus removing the pinch) or go to a accupuncturist.

I have heard that accupuncture is very effective against back pain, but I am averse to the pain. I just can't think of having all that needles stuck into my body!!!

My mother was diagnosed with cirrhosis a few years back and together with her medical regimen, she goes to a weekly accupuncture session. It seems to be helping her as she has never really been "sick" and she is responding to the meds better now with acupuncture.

Shelly, have you tried the table (lumbar) traction? Not sure if you've gone to the Physical Therapy rehabilitation but the traction is another option to release a pinched nerve from your spine. Please ask your doctor about it.

I have had a pinched nerve before and while they did give me pain pills the muscle relaxers they gave me were much more effective in helping with the pain. Mine took almost a month before I felt better even with the muscle relaxers though.

I have had this problem before and it's very painful. I went to my chiropractor and he helped me a lot. I had quite a bit of relief from my first visit. I used a heating pad and by the third visit, I was totally fine.
