My wife has been diagnosed with pernicious anemia.  What is this and is it different from regular anemia?  Is there something we should be doing different from treatment for regular anemia?  I'm very worried about her.

Pernicious Anemia is a form of megaloblastic anemia. It is usually caused by atrophic gastritis. The autoimmune destruction of gastric parietal cells leads to a lack of intrinsic factor, and since the absorption from the gut of vitamin B12 is dependent on intrinsic factor, this leads to vitamin B12 deficiency, one of the many causes of megaloblastic anemia.

How's your wife doing? Your post is more than a month old. I hope she's doing better now.

Pernicious anemia is a condition in which the body can't make enough healthy red blood cells because it doesn't have enough vitamin B12.

Pernicious anemia is a decrease in red blood cells that occurs when the body cannot properly absorb vitamin B12 from the gastrointestinal tract. Vitamin B12 is necessary for the proper development of red blood cells.

The symptoms of pernicious anemia and vitamin B-12 deficiency can be treated by replenishing the vitamin B-12 supply in the body. If a condition other than pernicious anemia is responsible for vitamin B-12 deficiency, treatment must also be directed at the underlying condition. Symptoms of vitamin B-12

deficiency may be improved after just a few days of medical treatment.
