A cousin's kid in the west coast was diagnosed with Blackfan Diamond anemia. What struck me the most is the fancy name. This is said to be a rare kind of anemia, affecting only around 600 people worldwide. It's a disease where the bone marrow produces very little or zero red blood cells. It's not definite what causes this one, but a genetic error concerning Gene RPS19 on chromosome 19 is Log in or Register to read more… |

Yeah, I agree, pretty fancy name for a terrible disease. Blackfan

Poor kid! I have read that several kids with this condition have some physical deformities or heart defects. Some even suffer from an irregular heartbeart because of a lack of oxygen that runs through the body.

As with other diseases that are being discovered… this is almost standard nomenclature and is nothing new. A lot of diseases are named after the doctors who first discover them, much like comets and other celestial bodies!

This is a very interesting info. The doctors who discovered the disease have very beautiful names.
So this is a genetic disease, meaning a child is born with it? So how is this treated?

Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA) is a blood condition, present at birth, which is characterized by a failure of the bone marrow to produce red blood cells, other blood cells such as white cells and platelets are usually not affected. By itself, the term "anemia" means low red cell counts. Unlike other types of anemia, DBA is a bone marrow failure syndrome. It has also been linked to a genetic Log in or Register to read more… |
