I've been hearing a lot about West Nile Virus. I know that it is a form of encephalitis, but what is it really?

Actually, no. Encephalitis is just a result of the virus reaching your brain. Most people have the virus and don't exhibit any symptoms at all.

It is spread by mosquitos so the best way to prevent west nile virus is to use an insect repellent and cleaning areas around your house that may be breeding grounds for these mosquitoes.

In 2008 alone, 44 people died from the virus. I think there have been new cases reported here and in Greece.

Well you can have it and not have any symptoms. But the most telltale signs include fever, tiredness, and body aches. It is really like the flu. Some people also develop skin rashes and swollen lymph nodes.

If you develop encephalitis or meningitis, you exhibit symptoms like headahce, high fever, stiff neck, disorientation, stupor, tremors and even go into a coma. Some people get paralyzed or suffer from weakness in the muscles.

Nope no vaccines have been made yet. At the most, the CDC says that a vaccine may take a few years to become available.

There is a vaccine made for horses. But the CDC has not approved its use for humans.

Mild disease, generally called West Nile fever, has some or all of the following symptoms:
Abdominal pain, back pain, diarrhea, fever, headache, lack of appetite, muscle aches, nausea, sore throat, vomiting
These symptoms usually last for 3 – 6 days.
With more severe disease, the following symptoms can also occur, and need prompt attention:
