Breast cancer is hereditary, so if you have women in your family who have it, you might want to consider surgery by removing your breasts before the cancer sets in.

I don't know, Humboldt, a double mastectomy is a pretty extreme way of avoiding breast cancer. I understand that people would want to avoid cancer at all costs, but having a mastectomy is not something that people normally do without even being sick. I think that's a little drastic isn't it? Ovarian cancer is also hereditary, does that mean that you should take out your healty ovaries too?

Actually, it's not so drastic. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, you might want to consider surgery. They studied 247 women who underwent preventive masectomies and none of them developed breast cancer.

Those with the genetic makeup that makes them susceptible to cancer should really consider preventive surgeries then. If only to avoid getting both life-threatening diseases.

That is true that cancer should not be neglected, however having a masectomy is a very drastic surgery that should definitely be consulted with a physician.

I totally agree with you Jaime. Even if you do have a family history of breast cancer that doesn't guarantee that you will get it 100% of the time. A double Log in or Register to read more… |
