I'm a writer and currently working on a novel, as well as continuously writing articles. On top of that I'm in school and type up a lot of long essays on top of endless hand-written notes. I'm worried about carpal tunnel but have no idea what I could do to prevent it other than not typing and writing so much (which isn't an option). Any ideas?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome has drawn much attention over the last 20 years – a time when we are using our hands more and more. One culprit for CTS is the computer. Those of us that spend hours as part of our jobs typing, are more susceptible to the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel. I also suffer in this problem. I have no knowldge about that.

The nature of my job also heavily requires me to sit in front of the computer and type for hours, so carpal tunnel syndrome is something that I really watch out for. Although there are other conditions that increase the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome, it won't hurt to be extra careful with our fingers, hands, and wrists while performing typing tasks…Anyway, what I usually do is take Log in or Register to read more… |

It is really best to position the keyboard at elbow level or a little below. This will also reduce pain on the shoulders. To avoid carpal tunnel syndrome, I also use an exercise ball to flex my fingers and wrists every now and then, because I work online for almost 10 hours per day.

I have heard that there are little cushions you can put on your keyboard to keep your wrists at the correct level compared to your hands. Does anybody know if they actually work? It's something I worry about too because I think I am starting to show symptoms unfortunately.

This is something I have been struggling with also. I'm nervous of getting CTS and not being able to do my work…Though I have never actually had it, and I'm wondering how bad it is, really. Is it actually too painful to type? I assume if you continue to work it will just get worse and not heal…Seems very crippling in this day and age.
