What causes cholesterol?  I have not checked up my cholesterol content in my body though I am 46 now.  Many of my relatives have advised me to have it checked.

Cholesterol levels can come from your genes as well as from what you eat. You should get your levels checked once a year especially if high cholesterol runs in your family. The good news is you can help it by eating whole grain foods and getting regular exercise.

Many factors can contribute to high blood cholesterol levels or cholesterol levels that are out of balance. Some of these factors are within your control, and some are not.

To some extent, your genetic make-up determines your cholesterol level.

Some people inherit a condition called familial hypercholesterolemia, which means that very high cholesterol levels run in the

Smoking does NOT cause cholesterol.

There are several factors that contribute to high cholesterol some are controllable while others are not.

Gender: After menopause, a woman's LDL-cholesterol level ("bad" cholesterol) goes up, as does her risk for heart disease.

Age: Your risk increases as you get older. Men aged 45 years or older and women aged 55 years or older are
