My wife has Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalga which I understand go together. My question is, what precipitates this disorder? Is there something we could have done to avoid her contracting this syndrome? We are really looking for answers here.

I do not personally have either of these conditions however my mother does. Fibromyalga is still somewhat unclear in terms of why and how it occurs however the doctor who is treating my mother said that she feels that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is inevitable for those who have Fibromyalgia. :(

Unfortunately, science has not yet found the answers for you. There are several theories of why these illnesses happen but no clearcut provable cause as of yet. Remember, there are still segments of the medical community who don't even recognize either of these as valid illnesses. It's going to likely be years before we get any closer to the truth.

Thanks guys. I just get so frustrated sometimes. My wife is in such severe pain and there isn't anything at all I can do about it. The doctors just act like it's no big deal, but I know how much she hurts and aches. She gets so sleepy, she falls asleep sitting up a lot too. They don't have to live there and see their loved ones suffer.

It tends to make it worse when so many things still seem unclear to us, but as history shows we have learned a ton from a medical standpoint over how many years now? I do not know anyone with this issue but the closest would be someone I know with MS and there are both good and bad bads as far as that is concerned.

I agree, it's awful when no one knows why someone is sick or how we get a sort of sickness. I'm sure they will keep finding out different things about the disease and it will get better. I'm sorry your wife is sick.

Has she been tested for Lyme Disease? If so, ignore me, except for the next paragraph. But if not…I found this paper (very lengthy, very verbose, very scientific) which says that "Indeed, accumulating experience suggests that Lyme Disease may be a frequent cause of fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue (8,12)." And Lyme Disease is treatable! At least, there are antibiotics available out Log in or Register to read more… |

Wow! I had no idea that there was anything like this. I had heard things about fibromyalgia but I had no idea they didn't know what caused it. Good luck with your wife, I hope they can find some type of treatment that helps!

How terrible. I think this is what Cher had at one time wasn't it? I've heard of it but I think a big part of why it hasn't been studied more is that everyone thinks these people are just lazy and are complaining too much. I think it's horrible to categorize people like this since they don't really know why it happens. I know it's a real condition.
