My daughter is coming down with a cold.  We are going on vacation on Saturday (Spring break) and I am hoping that she will be done with the cold by then.  Are there any ways to make it move on out quicker?

Zicam and Airborne seem to be the most popular choices for this. Push the fluids, vitamins, especially C, and make sure that she rests well. Wash those hands, arms and face bunches! :)

I don't think that you can necessarily get rid of it quicker but you can make sure it doesn't hang around longer than it should. You need to get plenty of rest and fluids and not push yourself. Things that can wait should so you don't wear yourself out and compromise your immune system.

Thanks, I'm going to pick up some Airborne when I'm in town today.  I would hate for her to be sick on the trip and at the beach!  I know she won't take it easy while we are there, so the key is to make her take it easy until we leave.

You can also try zinc lozenges, available over the counter at any pharmacy.  I don't know how effective they'll be right now, since the cold's already been there for a day or so, but the box says they're "clinically proven to shorten the duration of the common cold," or something like that.  It's worth a shot.

I have never tried those medications. I`d like to know if they really work. I had the flu last February. It was 3 weeks before I got better. This year I got a flu shot.

So far nothing is taking care of it.  She is still sneezing a lot and has a runny nose one minute and then is stuffy the next.  I've given her airborne since yesterday.  I'm starting to feel awful now too! Frown

I have done this before (but a doctor probably wouldn't recommend it) and it works for colds I don't know about flu. Take 2 500mg vitamin c tablets in the morning and two before bed for a couple of days and it seems to clear up quicker. Do NOT try this if you are pregnant though too much vitamin c can make you miscarry.

For myself I can most times manage to get rid of a common cold type just by taking in more vitamin C to pump my body from it. Very seldom do I end up "really sick" but I know a good many people that do, almost to the point of me wondering if my sister is on the verge of being a hypochondriac?

I agree that you need really mega doses of vitamin C-and you need the right sort so that you don't upset your tummy. Ideally you need to avoid ascorbic acid and find sodium ascorbate, as this is buffered and more gentle on the tummy.

It's gone finally!  I'm going to pick up some Vitamin C for the next one we get.  I hope we don't get another one for a long time, but who knows.

Thanks for all the tips!

I really don't think you can force a cold out. I think it has to run it's course. How did you know it was a cold versus allergies? I often wonder how to tell the difference.

Is this airborne medically proven? I've heard of it so many times, that it combats stress, colds and flu…

There is no such a medicine which will completely vanish the flu. You can only take prevention. Avoid direct exposure to hot or cold environment. Wear a cap in cold conditions. Vitamin C is best and hot fluids are also very helpful.
