How can you tell if it's a cold, flu or tonsillitis? My kids always get a sore throat when they get a cold so it's very hard to tell. I suffered badly from tonsillitis when I was a child but have managed to hold onto my tonsils and now I always get a very bad sore throat when I have a cold.

Cold symptoms usually begin with a sore throat, which usually goes away after a day or two. Nasal symptoms, runny nose, and congestion follow, along with a cough by the fourth and fifth days. Fever is uncommon in adults, but a slight fever is possible. Children are more likely to have a fever with a cold. With cold symptoms, your nose teems with watery nasal secretions for the first few days. Log in or Register to read more… |

Thanks, Rene, this is very helpful! I think a lot of people often misdiagnose themselves because some of the same symptoms are common through all three!

Yes this is very helpful so thanks. I also had tonsillitis many times as a child and I do remember my swollen glands. This was a big part in the diagnosis. Or family doctor didn't believe in taking tonsils out so I still have mine but they don't bother me any more.

Never had a tonsilitis since I was a kid but this will serve as a guide. I know someone who suffered tonsilitis and she had a dry mouth on sides, now she's okay. Thanks for sharing, Rene!

Tonsillitis
(ton-sil-lie-tiss) is an inflammation of the tonsils caused by an infection. In
tonsillitis, the tonsils are enlarged, red, and often coated (either partly or
entirely) by a substance that is yellow, gray, or white. Tonsillitis usually
occurs as part of a pharyngitis (throat Log in or Register to read more… |

Taking zinc, either as a syrup or lozenge, through the first few days of a cold may shorten the misery of an upper respiratory infection, a new research review shows.
The review also found that zinc cut the number of days that kids missed school because of being sick and reduced the use of antibiotics by cold sufferers. It also appeared to prevent colds in people who used it over the Log in or Register to read more… |
