Is it safe to take anti-depressants while pregnant? A friend of mine has been suffering from depression — she's had it since her late teen years — and she's taken an assortment of antidepressants. She just found out she's pregnant, and is sort of worried about the risks of her continuing with medications.

She should speak with her OB/GYN or primary care doctor, but the risks for the mother and baby are relatively low when it comes to taking anti-depressants, but they do vary among different drugs. Risks could actually be higher if she doesn't take her medications like premature birth, low birth weight, and increased risk of postpartum depression.

What anti-depressants is she taking? From what I know, the group of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, pose a really great risk of birth defects in babies. These birth defects include cardiac defects and even life-threatening respiratory disorders.

Yes, that's right. The FDA issued an advisory in 2005 after two
studies found that Paxil and other SSRIs, when used by women during the
first trimester of pregnancy, brought cardiac defect risks to babies.
The following year, the FDA instructed SSRI makers to indicate in their
labels that the drugs may cause life-threatening birth defects like
