My aunt has diabetes and cut her finger a month ago and it never healed. Now, there's an infection and they are discussing having to amputate the finger in an effort to save her hand. I never realized all this things that diabetes complicates.

I know, diabetes is such a crazy disease. Something that would be so easy for anyone else to recover from can be a disaster for a patient with diabetes. That's why they have to be so diligent about taking care of themselves and keeping that bllod sugar under control and not letting small little things like a cut turn into something that can be much more serious.

I think it has to do more in regards to whether your diabetes is under control or not. If your diabetes is uncontrolled it can cause poor circulation making it harder for your wounds to heal especially in the extremities.

Definitely poor circulation will slow wound healing, but those with diabetes also need to watch their extremities because of diabetic neuropathy, or nerve damage. Diabetics may have reduced sensation in their extremities so they may get a cut without even noticing it and therefore not treat it. If you are diabetic, take good care of your feet, keeping them clean and dry, to avoid having to Log in or Register to read more… |

I think that diabetic neuropathy is much more dangerous than anything else. It's really horrific to find that you are getting injured and all that without even feeling it!

This is very true. I have a friend whose toenail fungal problem got so complicated that the doctor had to cut his toe because it might lead to fatal complications because of his diabetes.

It's horrible. I mean, we sure can't avoid cuts forever. I would be paranoid if I knew I am not allowed to have a small cut or something.

I think that if your diabetes is controlled you don't have to worry about cuts. Unfortunately for a lot of people their diabetes is not controlled and that is not good. Some many health problems can arise from uncontrolled diabetes.
