Has anyone ever had an MRI? I have never had one and the doctor says I need one for my migraines. I am terribly claustrophobic and I really don't relish the fact of being in a huge machine with the thing all around me. Is there an alternative?

They do have open MRIs. I have had one of those done and the regular one. Your not enclosed at all. They slide you underneath a huge round thing. The sides are all open. Your still close to the top when you look up but it`s not as bad as the other way. You can also get medication before they do the MRI too.

I am the same way and had to have it done twice. I had the open MRI done both times and I was fine with it. They put music on some headphones for me and I just closed my eyes and tried to relax. It worked and it didn't seem to take long either.

If you are even a tiny bit claustrophobic I strongly reccomend the open kind. We had to drive farther away but I couldn't handle being in the little tube. Medication to calm your nerves isn't a bad thing either!

Is there a price difference between open and closed? I have no issues in tight spaces but I doubt I would be okay to stay perfectly still if its a long test.

Thank you all. I talked to the doctor and he is giving me a sedative and has ordered the MRI to be done in the open machine. They say it's not bad at all. Thanks for your answers and your support!

@ cranis-They didn't say it would be any more expensive and they also said they may be able to take me out for a minute or two between sections.

I don't think the open MRI's are as precise as the closed MRI's or at least that is what I was told.

Talk to your doctor and the place running the MRI, if they know you are claustrophobic they will most likely give you a sedative to help during the test.  just make sure to take a driver with you.

That doesn't sound like something I would llke either.  I know they did an MRI on my wife and they used the open one, she didn't have any trouble with it although she is terribly claustrophobic.  They also let me go in the room and sit with her although I had to clean out my pockets and make sure I had nothing on that would be attracted by the magnet.

I would have to have the open MRI because I hate being in enclosed spaces I have a tough time stepping on an elevator. My husband had one a couple of years ago and it was so loud! I was in the waiting room and I could here the MRI machine clearly and loudly. You would think they would find a way to make it quieter so at least you could relax while you lay perfectly still.

You should have the open MRI Jeffrey or have your doctor prescribe
