Has anyone ever had any issues with otoxic medications? Last week I put Neosporin on the TOP of my ear (NOT in it) and when I woke up the following morning, I couldn't hear. I've been to the doctor and was told that Neosporin is ototoxic and it likely got inside my ear during the night. I still have no hearing and the doctor believes it will be a permanent loss. :(

I knew that oral antibiotics could have this effect if taken for an extensive amount of time, well the really strong ones anyway but not Neosporin. Have you considered a second opinion maybe?

Did he figure out what is going on with your ear drum? Using Neosporin externally will rarely affect your hearing, despite having ototoxic ingredients, and when it does it is due to having a tear in your eardrum already.

My ear canal was swollen and he could not fully see my eardrum but he did say that perforations are long term and that childhood injuries often last late in life or indefinantely. I am waiting to see a specialist but that doctor figured it could be from an old tear. He also said that ear wax sometimes causes open sores within the ear and that could also allow access to the cochlea.

Gee, that's awful! I hate not being able to hear when I have an ear infection, let alone maybe being permanent! I hope you can get it fixed and your hearing returns.

Well, the good news is it might not be permanent. I can't speak for Neosporin specifically, but in looking up ototoxic damage, some lasts and some doesn't. I also found a site which lists possible hearing loss cures: http://www.hearinglossweb.com/…../cures.htm , including a tiny ear catheter Log in or Register to read more… |

I've never heard of this before. I didn't even know that topical Neosporin was dangerous to your hearing. I know I'll never try it around my ear now. That's really scary.
