Tonsilitus is an inflammation of the tonsils. Symptoms include: difficulty swallowing, ear pain, fever, chills, headache, sore throat, voice change or loss of voice. If the cause of the tonsillitis is bacteria such as strep, antibiotics are given to cure the infection. The tonsils are lymph nodes in the back of the mouth and top of the throat. They normally help to filter out bacteria Log in or Register to read more… |

The removal of the tonsils is called tonsillectomy. It is required when the tonsils are so large that they obstruct breathing and/or swallowing. However, before surgery will be considered, antibiotics need to be tried to see whether the patient's condition will improve.

Also, doctors consider tonsillectomy if the patient has had repeated
bouts of infection. The procedure is believed to provide enough benefit
to patients who have developed:
- seven or more episodes of throat infection in one year; or
- at least five episodes in each of two years; or
- at least three episodes in each of three years.

And when you say episode of throat infection, it means that associated
with fever, with enlarged lymph nodes, a pus-like coating covering the
tonsils, or/and evidence that the infection is streptococcal.

When I was five, my mom said my tonsils were usually the size of golf balls. When I was eleven, they finally removed them. I don't remember having a lot of trouble with them, but I'm sure I must have had a sore throat most of the time, with the tonsils being constantly enlarged. So far, my children have not been affected, as far as I know.

My coworker has his tonsil removed. I also have tonsillitis and he advised me that my tonsil be removed. I had a terrible tonsil inflammation when I was in high school that it had puss. It was very hard to swallow because it is painful and the taste is awful.
Are there any side effects of the tonsil removal?

While fairly common, a tonsillectomy is still a surgery that shouldn't be considered too lightly. There is a recovery period of a week or two while your throat heals, and there are some rare risks like most surgeries. As holywater said, it's most often recommended if you get tonsillitis frequently, or if your tonsillitis often interferes with your ability to sleep.

My mom told me that tonsillitis that occurs frequently could lead into heart problems. Is this true or just a fear from a mother?
My tonsillitis only occur when the climate is too cold and/or whenever I consume too much sweets. By the way, how does sweets cause the tonsils to inflame?

Since I had this I have heard how common tonsillitis is. I wouldn't have surgery for it though.

I had tonsillitis it was pretty painful. I was on antibiotics for over two weeks. My doctor did recommend that I have my tonsils out, but I think it's because I get sore throats pretty regularly.

It is usually caused by viruses or by bacterial infection. When viral infection is the cause, tonsillitis usually resolves without any treatment but rest, fluids, and pain medication as needed.Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, which are situated at the back of the throat, one on each side of the tongue. If the condition persists for more than 3 months, it is called chronic Log in or Register to read more… |
