How common is female hair loss and is it hereditary like male hair loss can be? If it is hereditary does it come from your mother or your father's side? The reason I have so many questions is that my Mom has started losing her hair and I am afraid that it may happen to me later too.

In all honestly I have only seen this myself as an issue with two females in my life so I am not sure its nearly as common as it is for the guys. There are products on the market now that seem to be more than there were ten and fifteen years ago so I would guess its either becoming an issue for many or more are just now taking notice.

While balding in men is almost always the result a genetic predisposition coupled with age, in women, it can happen at any time. In addition, underlying medical conditions can also be the cause of hair loss even when true androgenic alopecia is the diagnosis.

I have gone through emotionally tough times a few months ago, and I didn't know it could also affect me physically until I noticed I was shedding too much hair. Hair fall has always been a problem with me, but this time, it was worse than usual.

Iota- you probably have what's called telogen effluvium hair loss. This is hair loss that results after emotional or physical stress. The stress pushes large amounts of growing hairs into a resting phase and after a few months, the affected hairs might fall out easily. Although it can take months, the hair should grow back once the stress is resolved.Â

Shelly, don't worry about it so much. just because your mother has started to lose her hair does not mean that you will also. I am sorry for your mom but there may be something she can do so she should see her medical professional as soon as possible.

I started losing my hair in my early 30's among other symptoms. I was referred to a dermatologist who couldn't figure it out. I later found out it was my thyroid. This is a very common symptom of thyroid disorders and you should have that checked.

Um.. I'm in the middle of losing hair but not to the point that I'm going to be bald. I'm pregnant and it's one of the symptoms. Balding is hereditary and can be passed from parents to offspring.

There is a lot of baldness in my father side of the family from both women and men. I was losing lots of hair and the doctor told me that I had female pattern baldness. It just got worse due to stress. He told me that the only treatment would be Rogaine for women. I decided not to use the Rogaine because I am not good with consistency. I just try to keep my hair short and reduce stress to try Log in or Register to read more… |

Hair loss in women can be absolutely devastating for self image and emotional well being.
Unfortunately, society has forced women to suffer in silence. It is considered far more acceptable for men to go through the same hair loss process. Even more unfortunately, the medical community pays little attention to the issue of women's hair loss. Since it doesn't appear to be life Log in or Register to read more… |

Shelly, no need to worry because there's a proven hair loss or balding treatment in the market. Most product comes from the doctors recommendations. Consult your hair with the hair experts first. No need to ask in the salon, try to go to the doctor.
