Is viral meningitis transmissible to others? I have a cousin who has it right now and she's in the hospital. They don't have her in isolation but I was really cautious about going to see her until I find out more about viral meningitis.

Yes, some forms of bacterial meningitis are contagious. The bacteria can mainly be spread from person to person through the exchange of respiratory and throat secretions. This can occur through coughing, kissing, and sneezing. Fortunately, none of the bacteria that cause meningitis are as contagious as things like the common cold or the flu. Anyone can get viral meningitis, but it occurs most often in children. It is more common in the summer. Most cases of viral meningitis are relatively mild, with symptoms of headache, fever and general ill feeling, and those affected recover without medical treatment.
