There are actually a lot of things that can cause kidney failure.  It could be that there is a marked decrease in the supply of blood to the kidney.  It can be caused by dehydration, lacking fluid intake or abnormal blood flow to the kidneys.

Yes, that's correct.  Or kidney failure could also be caused by damage to the kidneys like in cases of sepsis, or taking medications that are very toxic like naproxen.

Having problems urinating could also lead to kidney failure.  Back pressure from any obstruction in the ureter or bladder can back up urine to the kidney and can damage them.

I've also heard that tumors can cause obstructions that can also lead to kidney failure.

I agree that the lack of fluid intake can cause kidney failure. That's why it's important to take plenty of water daily. I also read that too much protein intake puts so much burden on your kidneys.

Possibly the stones can create a blockage so the kidneys can't function at normal capacity? I

Eating salty foods can increase the work of the kidney thus risking it to kidney failures. Another cause of kidney failure is due to not urinating when it is needed. If we hold our bladder very long then bacteria will increase in our bladders and when they reach the kidney then they could destroy it.
