I am still in my first trimester, but as early as now, I am already starting to worry about labor and delivery. Can those who have had children share with me how contractions feel like? How do you know that you're already having contractions and how do you tell it's time?

In my case, the contractions felt just like menstrual cramps at first. The cramps kept on progressing in terms of intensity and frequency. You will know that it’s time to go to the hospital or call in your midwife once these contractions are very close together.

You will know contractions when they hit you. Your doctor will tell you to time the contractions and will give you instruction to call him or her, or go to the hospital once they are a certain number of minutes apart.

In my case, it was the kind of pain that runs up the spine. I just knew it was time to go to the hospital once my knees started turning to jelly and I can barely walk.

You will know it’s time when the pain on your tummy and your back intensifies to a level that you can hardly bear. Not to scare you honey, but let’s not sugarcoat it either. Giving birth does involve a lot of pain. Well at least in my case. And unless you get medication.

That’s why I suggest you do some research and come up with your own birth plan as early as now. Many women say that water birth is much much less painful, if not pain-free. And hypnobirthing, too. Sometimes, women also combine both water and hypno-birth.

I didn't have contractions before going to the hospital. I was actually rushed from the doctors office to the hospital to be induced because of high blood pressure. I was given an epidural right away. I do know that I kind of felt a pressure in my lower abdomen.
I agree with the other posters, and you will know it when they come to you. When you are pregnant, you get more in tuned Log in or Register to read more… |

They are very, very intense. It feels like your abdomen is cramping up really tightly, then unwinds… It will get to the point where you can time it. I waited 'til almost the last minute to go to the hospital, because I was afraid of false labor. I don't like going to hospitals to begin with. :)

I agree with everyone else – it starts off feeling like menstrual cramps and then gets more and more intense. It is very painful, but don't feel like you have to suffer if it gets too bad. I didn't know what to expect the first time so I decided to make my choices as I went along. It only took a few hours before I was asking for the epidural, lol.

This is all great advice because I am pregnant and very scared of contractions. I have heard some people compare them to menstrual cramps and then a few others say that they are nothing at all like menstrual cramps. Maybe that's because of the additional back pain and nausea that others have said come with contractions?

Contractions for me are like menstrual cramps. I felt it right on the navel, but it depends on some women. The pain from contraction would progress as water would continually gush more.

For me it felt like menstual cramps at the start. Then it intensified as it came in quicker succession. It was like my upper body is being separated from my lower body in the middle, but the doctors and the nurses were of much help.Â
