What you see there is either damaged liver cells or scar tissues. Alcoholic liver cirrhosis reduces the organ's ability to produce proteins and changes the way it processes hormones, medications, poisons and other stuff that the liver is supposed to process.

Yup, and the thing is, cirrhosis gets worse as years go by and may be life threatening!

Cirrhosis is actually the 7th leading cause of death (due to diseases) in the U.S. and is a noted killer of people between 45 to 65 years old.

Well, there are a lot of symptoms, including abdominal pain, nausea, dry mouth, excessive thirst, jaundice and fever. You may also get tired easily, or have that overall feeling of tiredness.

Alcoholic cirrhosis is the most common type of cirrhosis in the US and it affects 10-20% of heavy drinkers, usually after about 15 years of heavy alcohol consumption. The blood test usually consists of finding out what your liver enzyme levels are.

You can also have an incorrect blood result though if you drink alcohol the night before your blood test, your liver enzymes might come out elevated that doesn't necessarily mean you have liver cirrhosis. They would need to do an Ultrasound to confirm.
