I've been hearing this term in some commercials, and I know it stands for "chronic obstructive pulmonary disease", but what does that mean?  Is it different from emphasema?

COPD is a lung disease that makes it hard to breathe. It is caused by damage to the lungs over many years, usually from smoking.

When you have COPD:

You have a cough that won't go away.

You often cough up mucus.

You are often short of breath, especially when you exercise.

 

Symptoms include:

Coughing up more mucus than usual.

A change in the color or thickness of that mucus.

More shortness of breath than usual.
