Meningitis is inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, known collectively as the meninges. The inflammation may be caused by infection with viruses, bacteria, or other microorganisms, and less commonly by certain drugs. Meningitis can be life-threatening because of the inflammation's proximity to the brain and spinal cord; therefore the condition is Log in or Register to read more… |

I didn't know meningitis was so serious! It sounds really painful too. How do you know if a headache is really meningitis instead of just a headache? I've heard you can die of meningitis too. Is this true?

Yes, in some cases. I think it depends upon the type of meningitis you get. I'm not sure about that but I've heard that the kind that you catch from other people is the one that's deadly. The viral kind can be but I don't think it's as bad.

The viral kind may lead to your being hospitalised but generally you just ride it out and get over it once your body gets over the virus. You have a horrible headache and other symptoms-so bad that you can't move.
Bacterial meningitis has other symptoms, including a petechial rash.

Meningitis is caused by a viral infection. It is also said bacterial and fungal infections also can lead to meningitis.

Meningitis is very serious. I remember when I was in high school a guy I had previously dated died of it. One way you can tell if it's more than just a headache is if your neck is very stiff and sore and you can't turn your head.

2Yes, that call it the icecream test. In an adult you can just ask them to make the movement but in a kid who is so young that they can't follow instructions well you ask them to lick an icecream, or similar. 1

As many of you have said, there are two main types of Meningitis- viral and bacterial.Â
Â
Viral Meningitis is the more common type. It is an inflammation of the meninges (the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord). It can be caused by many different viral infections but the most common causes are Mumps, herpes virus (such as the Epstein-Barr virus), herpes simplex Log in or Register to read more… |

Meningitis means swelling of the lining around the brain and spinal cord. Septicaemia is blood poisoning caused by the same germs. Meningitis and septicaemia can occur together or separately.
People who are faced with meningitis and septicaemia have to act fast to save a life – a race against time.
Meningitis and septicaemia can be hard to recognise at first. Symptoms can appear Log in or Register to read more… |
