How do you deal with the kids who want to have their own cellphones while we think they are too young for that? My brother's daughter believes that she deserves her own cellphone. She is only 8!

I think cellphones are useful for us to monitor where our kids are going. We can buy a cellphone that has minimal features and we could block incoming calls besides the numbers that we install.

You tell them no!  You set the age that your kids can have cellphones.  They have to be responsible enough to have them.  My daughter got one when she was 10 – she had to walk back and forth to school and I wanted her to have a phone.  She was ready and she did great with it.

I agree with Jaime. Nowadays, we tend to give too much to our kids way before the time they can deal with them. My daughters are almost eight and I don't even let them touch my cell phone. I do hate when I hear kids talking to their parents as if they were there to give them everything they want. They definitely feel entitled to everything under the sun. I think kids need limits.

My two teens (17 & 16) have cell phones. I think once children are able to do things away from home and they might need to contact parents, they need a way to do that.

I don't think so. I think she is too young to be responsible for a cellphone. It's not really safe for a kid to have a cellphone.

Maybe in middle school a kid needs a cell phone…MAYBE. I am sick and tired of seeing 7 and 8 yr olds wander around walmart texting and talking on their phones…they are too young and there is just no reason for it. An 8 yr old should be with a responsible adult at all times and therefore should not need a phone.

I know what you talk about. What is the importance of a cellphone for the kids? There should not be something serious and urgent to talk with a kid that someone has to call him instead of his parents.

My daughter is 5 and she is already asking when she can have a cell phone.  I think it is so she can  play games because she plays games on mine.  I think I will get my children cell phones when they start going out without me or a friend's parents.  I want them to be able to call me or 911 at any time.

I agree it's ridiculous for 7 year old kids to have cellphones. I got one when I was 14, a few years after I started going out without my parents. I never missed it beforehand. I still just use it when I really need to get into contact with someone, or for texting (mostly to keep me sane at work). I avoid talking on cellphones though due to the related health risks.

I think that every child should have a way to get in touch with their parents immediately by the time they start going to school. They don't need a cell phone with games or anything fancy. Just a phone that can only call their parents and 911.

I don't have any kids but if I have one, I'll make sure he gets it when he reach his legal age. It is too risky for kids nowadays to own a mobile phone because there are a lot of strangers that they can communicate with and my fear is that they could possibly meet in person.

I personally think that an eleven year old kid can have his own cell phone. However, the parents should be responsible enough to give them a cell phone with only the basic features, so that they can make contact during emergencies, but not be able to have access to features they are not fit to handle yet.

Depending on the kid, I think 8 year old is too young to have a cellphone. I wonder what important things they would do with the cellphone at that age. I would wait till my kids reach 15 before buying them cellphones.
