A close girlfriend has been complaining of very minor spotting after sexual contact. She thinks it is normal and is just caused by friction. I think this went on for a few months. Then lately, the spotting became more apparent, and the blood-tinged discharge would for days after sex and in between periods. Anybody experienced this before? Is this normal? She's on BCP, nothing else.

I have experienced this before, and the diagnosis was cervicitis. Cervicitis is an infection of the lower genital track, when your cervix gets inflamed. This one is caused by infection from certain STD, injury to the cervix from a foreign object inserted in the vagina, from birth control devices like diaphragm or cervical cap, or worse, by cancer.

What kind of BCP is she on right now or do you know? I have never seen or heard of anyone having a BCP that could end with this result but then again there are a few new ones out on the market too.

I would definitely recommend that your friend make an appointment with her gynecologist as soon as possible. If she does have an inflamed cervix from a sexually transmitted disease or from anything else it needs to be checked out. Hopefully it's nothing serious but if it should turn out to be cancer of the cervix it needs to be treated and monitored carefully and putting off treatment is not Log in or Register to read more… |

It is unknown to a lot of women that many cases of cervicitis go untreated because those who have the infection do not know that they actually do. Oftentimes, there are no obvious Log in or Register to read more… |

Is her BCP new? Sometimes when changing birth control it can cause spotting as your body is adjusting to the new dose of spotting. If intercourse is painful for your friend she should definitely go to her OB/GYN.

A friend of mine also on BCP complains of spotting. But she claims it is normal and common among those on BCP.

Do genital warts also cause spotting after sexual contact?
