A friend of mine swears by netipot or nasal irrigation as a very effective way of treating sinusitis or even colds. Has anybody here tried using netipots? How effective really is it in reducing sinusitis episodes?

If I am not mistaken, I have seen this on Oprah once, and I think she swears by it. I didn't get to finish that episode though and don't know if she did explain it or not. But a friend of mine does use the neti to cleanse his nasal cavity. He says that nasal irrigation is an ancient Ayurvedic (India) practice, is one and is very effective. And what do you do exactly?

Here's a demo video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..8KOsNtpV8w
You tilt your head sideways, and using a tea pot (or a neti pot), you pour salt water solution (not iodized salt!) into one nostril, breather through your mouth, and allow the water to run through and automatically go out the other nostril through Log in or Register to read more… |

Some clinical tests have actually shown that this is safe, is beneficial, and has no significant side effects. Nasal irrigation, in a wider sense, can also refer to the use of saline nasal spray or nebulizers to moisten the mucus membranes.

I agree. This is the reason why people should only use clean salt, and clean water. The water should be luke warm (not hot or cold) and the salt should be thoroughly dissolved. Remember that the membranes in your nose are very sensitive so just a little dirt could set off a sneezing attack, your allergies or even infections!

I used the netipot when I had Swine Flu. It's saline, not salt, that you add to the water. When your sinuses are really congested and you find yourself unable to drain them by just blowing your nose, a sinus flush is really helpful! I was so stuffed up I couldn't breathe and had the mucus running out my nose constantly. But the netipot is a good way to relieve that. Your sinuses will Log in or Register to read more… |

How do you know the right tempeture to use for something like this? I have watched the videos and read a great deal on this but your nose is quite sensative. At least mine is and when its sinus time, its even worse. Other than discomfornt is there any harm?

I think I would like to try this one. I've been frequently plagued by sinusitis and I have been looking for alternative cures because the medicines, antihistamines and all that stuff are not working for me!

You are supposed to use warm water, the same temperature of your skin.. Too hot or too cold can be painful, but I've never heard that it could be harmful. Also if you're not using a proper saline to water ratio, you may feel a burning sensation so be sure you don't use too much saline or salt, or whatever solution you prefer.

I have never used a netipot, but I am a huge fan of nasal irrigation. I have a white bottle with a black top that gently pushes the water through one naval cavity and out the other. I wish I had known about it earlier when my children were younger and I would have used it with them.
