I have seen that study and actually insomnia is not a direct killer like it might sound. Basically, getting little to no sleep just wears on the insomniac's body, making them more susceptible to other ailments. Men in the study who were diabetic or had high blood pressure were more likely to die during the study than their healthier counterparts.

Can you imagine, more than half of the insomniacs died during the study's duration! In contrast less than 10% of those who slept well died in the 14 years of the study!

I think the study needs more attention. A replicative study should be able to prove if they have representative samples. My thinking is that they could have gotten older men, or sick men.

There are certain foods that can cause sleep disturbances when eaten near bedtime. Try to avoid high-fat foods and protein before bed. Studies in a sleep lab showed that the more high-fat a person's diet was, the more they experienced sleep disturbances such as tossing and turning throughout the night and waking up often, had abnormal breathing while sleeping and had less time spent in REM Log in or Register to read more… |
