Does anyone have any helpful advice on dealing with TMJ pain? I have had it for years and used to have it fairly well controlled but have been having a lot of flare ups recently.

The only thing that works consistently for me is having physical therapy and getting the insurance company to pay for it was rough. Try looking for a massage therapist in your area who specializes in TMJ therapy.

Be certain the cause of the additional pain is TMJ, you could very well have something going on with your teeth or with the vertebre in your neck, your c3 and c4 vertebre do affect your face and head. In either instance your doctor or dentist could request your visit to a physical therapist

When my TMJ is flaring up I will try and go on a soft diet for a few days and alternate ice and heat. I used to have some "freezing" gel I could rub down my jaw line and it worked wonders but I haven't found any of it in a while.

You can use heat and ice therapy to assist with reducing muscle tension and spasm. For TMJ patients a treatment of cold applications is best.
Cold packs are great for relieving the pain.

According to my physical therapist my TMJ is getting worse and is moving down my upper back. Joy! I have been under a little extra stress lately hopefully when things calm down it will ease off some.

I'm having a lot of trouble with TMJ, myself. I was diagnosed years ago and my dentist told me that all the pressure on my teeth is causing my gums to recede and I've had a lot of problems with that too. I recently bought a mouth guard at the grocery store which looked similar to the one my dentist had made for me. However, once I got it home I read on the box that it was not meant for anyone

Muscle relaxers work well but I would recommend only using them when you really need them. If you take them all the time you will constantly have to increase the dosage to get the same effect.
