My mother-in-law was recently diagnosed with it. She said that is really painful… I don't know if it can be hereditary, but my husband is beginning to experience the same symptoms that she has.

There is no definitive research that it can be hereditary…yet. I am the only one in my family to have TMJ but my grandmother has rheumatoid arthritis and there could be a link there.

I experienced TMJ a some years back, and it went away unnoticed. However, I am now experiencing pain at the side of my neck that extends to the base of my ear. Is this related to the TMJ? I have no problems with chewing or opening my mouth.
