My daughter has severe seasonal and indoor allergies. She has to take Zyrtec every day. I hate that she lives on this medicine, but if she doesn't she gets sinus infections. I have thought about asking her doctor for allergy shots.

How often would she need to have the shots?

First off she would have to go through a series of tests (shots) to see what she is allergic to.  That is how they know what allergy shots she needs each week.  I believe it's every week that you get the shot.

I strongly agree in going through tests to determine exactly what she is allergic to, before taking in antihestamines.I used to have no allergies on food, dust , etc..but I just recently developed an allergic reaction to medium sized crabs.

Can you get allergy shots for just about anything? As in, is there a general allergies shot or are they broken down between the types (like cats, trees, and so on). I knew someone years ago on school that did this but I think it was just for one type.

Hmm.. That's a very good question. I don't think there's one test that could determine all of your allergies. I think it will have to be done one by one. But I am not an expert, so I am not sure as well.

My personal experience with shots is that for all the time and money it takes, she's better off just taking her medication. I started shots when I was in grade school was told in high school my allergies are no longer an issue but here I am, 30 years later and taking Allegra on a daily basis.

It definitely something to consider.  I haven't had the shots myself, but I do know that the shots are more frquent when you first start and then less and less as you go along the course of treatment.

Shots can definitely work but it takes a while before desensitation kicks in.  One other thing to remember is as people get older, they can react to other allergens that they never reacted to before.

I never had any luck with the allergy shots but some people swear by them. I have taken antihistamines for years. I also have an epi-pen for bee stings since I'm violently allergic to them.

How long does a normal allergy test take and what do they recommend afterwards? I know a friend got shot about 8x the other day and is still itchy from a few of the samples they used on him.

My daughter had allergy tests many years ago when she was about 5 years old and found she was allergic to Maple trees, oranges, peas, carrots, chocolate, dog dander, penecillan, etc.  She never had allergy shots and the doctor said she would probably outgrow them.  That she didn't have to avoid things she was allergic to but to have a little every once in a while so her body would adjust to
