There are many non-sedating antihistamines now. Ok, let's just make it clear-these meds will not cure the condition. It simply treats the symptoms, and must be taken ongoing so that you maintain relief.

So true, it isn't curing anything. If you or your mother are having an allergic reaction to something the best action is to stop taking that medicine or stop eating that sort of food that is causing this.
The allergy medicine or creams are only helping once the reaction happens.

My sister, just recently discovered that she is allergic to Advil, which is ibuprofen. So she simply avoids pills that has ibuprofen. There are other pain killers out there. Have your mother go through an extensive allergy test. She might be allergic to other stuff as well.

The best thing to do is to stop taking the medicine. If you are still having problems, then its time to make an oppointment with your doctor.
